Many consumers are becoming better informed about their products and are no longer putting up with nasty, unnecessary additives. More consumers are looking at labels, and buying products not based on brand name, but on ingredient lists. The skin care industry has been effected by this changing demographic and many of the larger companies unwilling or unable to change are loosing customers to smaller, more responsible brands.

While there has been a lot of press about a number of ingredients in anti aging skin care to avoid such as parabens, mineral oil, lanolin and so forth, there are a number of fantastic natural ingredients that active consumers should look for in their skin care products.

Here are just a few active ingredients to look for:

Resveratrol – resveratrol, coming most often from the grape, is a super antioxidant that has been shown to have amazing anti-aging effects. While resveratrol is most often taken orally, there are more & more studies showing the benefits of the antioxidant used topically in skin care products.

Peptides – peptides are a very new and big thing in anti-aging skin products at the moment. Made up of short strings of amino acids, peptides are essentially messengers in the body, and can be used to activate the body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid, elastin, collagen and so forth. They can also be effective at healing the skin, reducing discoloration, swelling and more!

Vitamin C – this powerful antioxidant has amazing effects on the skin. Recent studies have shown that topical application can be 10-15x more effective at delivering the antioxidant to the skin than vitamin c taken orally. Topical application of the powerful vitamin has been shown to enhance collagen production, tone and tighten the skin, while reducing discoloration, sun spots and so forth. When used in conjunction with vitamin e, vitamin c skin care products have been shown to reduce skin’s vulnerability to UV generated skin damage by 400%.

Retinol – a vitamin A derivative, retinol is a powerful antioxidant that is very effective against wrinkles. While some will experience irritation with retinol, after this a brief initial period, most users report marked positive changes in their skin.

Hyaluronic Acid – Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body. Hyaluronic acid is used to plump up the skin and gives the skin much of its supple, smooth, youthful appearance. As we age hyaluronic acid begins to decline, so utilizing products that have it will reduce the appearance of wrinkles and give the skin more of a youthful look.

While there are many great natural ingredients in anti-aging skin care, the above are some of the most important and crucial to make sure you are utilizing in your daily skin care routine. On top of utilizing these ingredients, making sure that you are using an exfoliant daily is also important. Both scrubs and washes utilizing alpha hydroxy acids are effective ways to exfoliate your skin. Make sure to moisturize well after using such products though to ensure your skin stays looking beautiful. It is also important to avoid prolonged sun exposure when using products with alpha hydroxy acids.
