With the cost of gas prices constantly increasing and the precarious global warming issue at hand, efficient cars are becoming more in demand than ever. The results are in for 2011 and The American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy has dubbed the Honda Civic GX as the greenest car for 2011 with the Ford Fiesta SFE not too far behind. Other notable vehicles among the list of 13 greenest cars include the Chevrolet Cruze and the Nissan Leaf. Results were based on smog emissions, gas mileage and emissions known to accelerate the effects of global warming.

The Civic GX Lands In The First Place

What is notable about the GX is that it’s the first car ever to use natural gas. It actually outputs less gas emissions than any hybrid on the market; it’s internal combustion is the cleanest of any vehicle on the market. What powers the GX is a four cylinder 1.8 Liter with 113 hp and 109 lb feet of torque and reaches 0-60 in 12.6 seconds. Handling is on par with that of regular Civics. Unless you live close to a natural gas station, pumping up the car might prove to be a difficult task unless you spend an extra $6 in order to have a fueling station installed in your home. Mileage stands at around 24 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the freeway. A federal tax credit for $4k is available towards the MSRP which stands at $25,490.

Ford Fiesta’s SFE Is One Efficient Non-Hybrid

It’s rather surprising but another car that made the list actually isn’t a hybrid; it’s the Ford Fiesta with the Super Fuel Economy Package. This package includes a few aerodynamic changes and designs including a redesigned lower grille and underbody shield, resulting in optimum efficiency. Mileage stands at 30 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the freeway. This makes the Ford Fiesta SFE the second most efficient non-hybrid on the market. It’s fueled by a V4 1.6 Liter Engine with a total output of 119 hp and 109 lb feet of torque. The interior features nice touches such as ambient lighting and safety features such as air bags and electronic stability control. The base model 2011Ford Fiesta runs at around $13,320 and the SFE package costs an additional $695.

Ready to finally go green? Choosing an eco-conscious car not only saves you on fuel costs, it also helps to preserve the environment. Any of these choices would be a good choice. The Fiesta SFE is a pretty solid choice since it’s not too expensive compared to the regular Fiesta model. The Civic GX is also a good choice since it tops out at the #1 spot according the ACEEE. Filling her up may be difficult and costly if you’re not near a gas station that offers natural gas, however the tax credit is a nice incentive. The results from the ACEEE are very promising and it’s nice to see automobile manufacturers make their green cars better than ever.
